It is with tear filled eyes I’m writing this post. We lost this sweet baby to congestive heart failure. She had been on 4 different meds twice a day but it simply wasn’t enough. Many of you might not remember her story but it’s worth hearing. We had just moved into our home in Valley View that would become the official Muttley Farms when I got a call from a person we had never met. They told us a dog was being abused by her college owner and she desperately needed a safe place to go. We were not ready for new arrivals at that point but that wasn’t Phoebe’s fault. We knew we couldn’t just ignore the call so she arrived about 2 hours later. When she first got here you couldn’t even touch her. She would scream and cower at any movement so we just had to be patient. Eventually she learned to trust us and she settled in with the rest of the gang. We had the wonderful opportunity of meeting a beautiful lady who came twice a week to help out around the house. Her name was Judy and she and Phoebe had an instant bond. After several months Judy asked if she could adopt Phoebe and of course the answer was yes. Phoebe continued to flourish under her care and learned that not all humans were bad. While we were away for New Years last year I got a call telling me that Judy was sick and in the hospital. We went straight from the airport to visit and learned her prognosis was not good. I was there when her family promised to care for her 2 dogs and Judy passed a few days later. Within a week I got a call stating Phoebe and her sister needed a place to go. Naturally they were both welcome and they arrived later that evening. Phoebe’s sisters name is Tara and she was adopted by a wonderful family but the decision was made that Phoebe would remain with us. She seemed very happy and was very loving and would often play with the other small dogs. She enjoyed her time with her Daddy in the recliner and would stay as long as he sat there. Phoebe’s health started to decline so we were at the vets office often. She was different in so many ways but that’s one of the things we loved the most. This is the hardest part of rescue. When they come into our lives they trust us with a piece of their heart. When they leave they take a piece of ours no matter how they leave. Her presence will be missed.
